History: | Named La Veta Peak by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN) in 1906, but renamed by the Board on Geographic Names (BGN) on June 23, 1949, in response to Colorado State Statute, to Mount Mestas. The name honors Felix B. Mestas, Jr., a member of the 88th Division who died in battle in Italy during World War II. |
