History: | Named by Henry Gannett in 1873 as part of the Hayden Survey. In 1901, a suggestion was made to apply the name Mount McKinley to the highest point on Mount Massive but no official action was taken. In 1916, the BGN approved the name Gannett Peak for the highest point; however, citing considerable objection from area residents, the decision was vacated in 1922. In 1965, a suggestion was made to apply the name Mount Sir Winston Churchill but once again no action was taken. |
